As bassist for John Fred and His Playboy Band, Harold Cowart played
one of the 1960s most recognizable bass licks. Cowarts bass
bubbles through Judy In Disguise (With Glasses), a No. 1
hit in the United States and other countries in 1968.
A professional musician since he was 14 and a member of Lenny Capello
and the Dots, Cowart, a Baton Rouge resident and native, died June 27
at his home. He was 66.
Following his 60s run with John Fred Gourrier and the Playboy
Band, Cowart moved to Miami and recorded and toured with the Bee Gees
and their younger brother, Andy Gibb.
Cowarts 70s and 80s session work, much of it at Miamis
Criteria Recording Studio, included such major hits as Brook Bentons
Rainy Night in Georgia, Kenny Rogers and Dolly Partons
Islands in the Stream, Barbra Streisands Guilty,
Frankie Vallis Grease and Jay Fergusons Thunder
Island.
After subsequent years of obscurity playing Baton Rouge area clubs with
Joe Landry and the Southland Band, Cowart joined the house band for
the 1986 Cinemax special Fats & Friends. Paul Shaffer
led the group (featuring Rolling Stone Ron Wood) as it backed rock n
roll pioneers Fats Domino, Ray Charles and Jerry Lee Lewis.
More recently, Cowart operated Bluff Road Recording, a studio near his
Prairieville home. He produced everything from the Louisiana Boys (featuring
John Fred Gourrier, Joe Stampley and G.G. Shinn) to New Orleans trumpeter
Al Hirts final studio album to the nationally known local rapper
Young Bleed.

Saturday, June 12Mississippi Juke Joint Stage
3:304:30 pm

On Friday, June 18, 2010, a rare performance of five talented Alabama
blues songstresses sharing the stage will make for a "Wang Dang
Doodle" celebration. The show will be held at Little Willie's Blues
and Jazz Club in downtown Tuscaloosa's Temerson Square beginning at
8 p.m.
Sweet Claudette, Shar-Baby, Carroline Shines, Debbie Bond and Rachel
Edwards are five women billed on the
Alabama Blues Women Showcase. Each brings to the table a different
style of blues, and all hail or originate from the state of Alabama.
Birmingham native Sweet Claudette now resides in Detroit and produces
an urban blues sound that entertains audiences on U.S. and Canadian
tours. Shar-Baby moved to Birmingham from Indiana after playing several
years at Old Memphis, Alabama's Freedom Creek Festival, and she has
recently gone on European tour with her down-home juke joint blues.
Tuscaloosa's Carroline Shines, daughter of the late, great Johnny Shines,
is a classic and soulful belter, and her showmanship brings audiences
to their feet every time. Debbie Bond has played with many Alabama blues
legends and brought out her own style of traditional-meets-contemporary
blues that she has performed in the U.S. and overseas in Europe, where
she was recently the cover story of the prestigious IL Blues magazine
of Italy. Rachel Edwards is an up-and-coming star who has been the Alabama
Blues Project advanced band's lead singer for several years and recently
performed in the 2010 International Blues Challenge Youth Showcase.
For more information, you may contact the Alabama Blues Project at
(205) 752-6263 or Little Willie's at (205) 344-9986. Also, for video
and audio samples of these blues women, visit their website at alabamablues.org/abws.htm.
More About the Artists . . .
SWEET CLAUDETTE:
Blues songstress Sweet Claudette is a mistress of raw and funky urban
blues and a force to be reckoned with. Her down home style is contagious
and guaranteed to raise the roof!
Born in Heflin, Alabama, her family soon migrated north and eventually
settled in Detroit, Michigan, home of the Motor City blues. She always
retained her southern connections and returned to live in Alabama as
an adult and now moves back and forth between her homes in Detroit and
Alabama.
As a performer of classics and her own original songs, she is an ambassador
of low-down urban blues. With six albums under her belt, this blues
woman cites Alberta Adams, Etta James, B.B. King, Katie Webster, and
John Lee Hooker as her biggest influences. Aside from her relentless
travels and music making, Claudette finds time to share her knowledge
and experience with kids through a Math in Music Program that she created
in partnership with Blues in the Schools.
Sweet Claudette continues to gain international acclaim while performing
at festivals, clubs and lounges in the United States and Canada. Anyone
who has had the pleasure of meeting Claudette Harrell Manning can surely
tell you why they call her Sweet!
Also catch Sweet Claudette in Alabama on Saturday,
June 12th at the Magic
City Blues Society Junkyard Juke
at 2:30 p.m. at Trey Taylor's Studio in Avondale and
Saturday, June 19th at Mr.
Gip's Juke Joint in Bessemer!
SHAR-BABY:
Often compared to Jessie Mae Hemphill, Alabama blues singer/guitar player
Shar-Baby's good-time soulful blues gets the house rocking and feet
stomping.
Shar-Baby first fell in love with the blues aged 6, after hearing a
recording of Hubert Sumlin, Howlin Wolfs legendary guitarist, and it
became her dream to follow in his footsteps. She comes from a very musical
family and her father was a gospel singer, who opened for many greats
including Sam Cooke, the Dixie Humingbirds, and the Blind Boys of Alabama.
Music was in her bones from the beginning and she still plays the Harmony
electric guitar her Dad bought her in the early 60's. She formed her
first band as a teenager with her sister and they called themselves
the Braylock Sisters. Over the years, Shar has traveled from North to
South living and performing her upbeat blues.
Born in South Bend, Indiana, Shar moved for a time to Pensacola, Florida.
When the late, great Willie King booked Shar Baby for his annual Freedom
Creek Blues Festival, she fell in love with the state, reconnected with
her Alabama roots, and finally settled in Birmingham, Alabama, where
she is a regular at local blues clubs and the famous Mr. Gips Juke Joint.
All her life she'd heard stories from her great grandmother, who was
born and raised in Jackson Gap, Alabama, and she says that moving to
Alabama felt like finally coming home.
Shar has spread her blues to audiences in top clubs and festivals across
the United States, England and Spain. She has shared the bill with many
greats, including the Legendary Sam Lay, Denise LaSalle, T-Model Ford,
Honeyboy Edwards, Paul Oscher, Jerry Portnoy, Kent Burnside, Lightenin'
Malcolm and Cedric Burnside, Bob Margolin, Nappy Brown and Deborah Coleman.
Since Shar-Baby has begun her blues career, she has successfully recorded
three CDs - My Life, Just Jukin and The Blues is Here To Stay and she
is currently working on her fourth CD, Rockin the Blues . Shar-Baby's
performance is upbeat and electrifying - she truly captures the essence
of the blues!
CARROLINE SHINES:
One of Alabamas best-kept secrets is the talented blues singer Carroline
Shines who is carrying on the deep blues tradition she learned from
her father, the late, great, world-renowned Johnny Shines. A regular
on the Alabama festival and club circuit, she sings her own brand of
the blues. Her powerful, soul stirring vocals and commanding stage presence
leave crowds eager for more!
As the daughter of outstanding bluesman Johnny Shines (one of the few
to travel with the legendary Robert Johnson), Carroline grew up in a
rich musical environment with her father and his many blues-playing
friends as her mentors. She dedicated her early years to raising a family
and singing in her church and local bands. Since her children have grown
and flown the coop, Carroline has dedicated more time working with the
Alabama Blues Project helping to educate the next generation about the
blues. She is also working hard to keep her father's memory alive and
in December, 2009, Carroline successfully had a local street named in
honor of her father. With her raw gospel tinged vocals and warm, engaging
stage presence, Carroline Shines inspires crowds wherever she sings!
Also see Carroline at Wentzel's in Tuscaloosa
on June 19th for an AIDS benefit concert.
DEBBIE
BOND:
Blues singer, guitar player and songwriter Debbie Bond has been paying
her dues to play the blues in the Alabama backwoods for over 30 years
and performs with soul and emotion. She has been described as sounding
like a cross between Bonnie Raitt and Janice Joplin but Debbie does
it her own way with a mix of house rockin' covers and originals. . .
Bond is fully licensed to thrill!
Debbie has been associated with many great blues masters, starting
with sharing her band with the late, great Johnny Shines. She has since
worked with or performed alongside Jerry "Boogie" McCain,
James Peterson, Eddie Kirkland, Kenny Neal and many more, as well as
touring in the US and Europe playing guitar with Lil' Jimmy Reed, Little
Whitt and Big Bo, Eddie Kirkland and Sam Lay. Most recently, Bond was
guitar player for the outstanding Alabama bluesman Willie King.
Born in Los Angeles, California, her family moved to England when she
was eight years old, where she fell in love with the blues and formed
her first band. At age 22, Debbie visited Alabama and was surprised
and delighted to discover Alabama's rich blues music culture. She decided
to stay and dedicated herself to bringing the amazing Alabama blues
to a wider audience. In 1995 she co-founded the Alabama Blues Project,
an organization with a mission to preserve and promote the rich, living
heritage of Alabama blues. She has received numerous awards for her
work in blues education and together with the staff and musicians at
the Alabama Blues Project has introduced the blues to tens of thousands
of children and adults. She is a regular on the Southeast club and festival
circuit and has performed overseas in England, Ireland, Scotland, Germany,
Luxemberg, France, Switzerland, and Italy.
RACHEL
EDWARDS:
For as long as she can remember, 20 year old blues singer Rachel Edwards
has had a love for singing. Don't let her youth mislead you - Rachael
has a rich, soulful and enchanting sound beyond her years!
Rachel's childhood was filled with the sounds of Southern soul, blues
and R & B, and her home's sound track was flavored with Sam Cook,
Otis Redding and Aretha Franklin. In school she was exposed to classical
music and a gospel choir and knew that being a singer and performer
was her dream in life. At the age of 15, Rachel was introduced to the
Alabama Blues Project and got her first real taste of blues performing.
Like a duck to water she found her home! With the Alabama Blues Project,
she was able to closely work with - and perform with - blues legends
like Willie King, Sam Lay, Bobby Rush, Eddie Kirkland and Little Jimmy
Reed. She also connected with blues divas like Carroline Shines and
B. J. Miller and performed at venues and festivals across the South.
Most recently, Rachel showcased with the ABP advanced band at the 2010
International Blues Challenge in Memphis.
Whether she is singing blues classics or her own original compositions,
Rachel's powerful emotional approach demonstrates a broad expressive
range. Her powerful stage presence is immediate and her songs hit with
a deep, heartfelt sincerity. Remember the name, because Rachel Edwards
is a sensational star with a bright future!

Courtesty of Bob
Lefsetz Analysis: "Important Sales Trends You Need To Know":
1. Focus on the music. Get it to the point where the audience only needs
to hear it once to get it.
2. Let people listen for free. Then sell the physical product as a souvenir,
and put out unique product online.
3. One great track is better than ten mediocre ones.
4. Don't worry about confusing the marketplace with more product. It
just allows new fans to discover a plethora when they finally tune in.
Meanwhile, the Internet allows the fulfillment of the true fan's dream,
a steady flow of product. In the old days, you were a fan of a band
in high school, their next record came out when you were married. Today,
you can put out new songs while students are still in the same semester!
And you should!
5. You must work live. It's the best way to connect with people. You've
got to be so good, you close the audience. Performing is a different
skill than playing in a studio. Start honing your chops now. Play anywhere
and everywhere you can. Not focused on the money, but the development
of stage skills.
6. Radio is gravy. People no longer believe radio builds career acts.
Don't be beholden to the airwaves. See them as just another outlet.
7. Make videos. Creativity is key. We're returning to the age of MTV.
Either play live, demonstrating your skills, which is how Andy McKee
built a career on YouTube, or come up with an OK Go-type video. Wow
us visually. The means of production are now in the hands of the proletariat.
Hell, you can get a Flip HD camera for $150 and you can edit on your
computer...
8. Experience counts. Everybody gets better the longer they do something.
9. Haters abound. If you're not being criticized, you're not doing it
right, you're only playing in front of family and friends. Hate intensifies
the bigger you get, especially in the Net world, where everybody gets
a voice. There is no protection. Wander into the world and experience
the slings and arrows, toughen your skin.
10. Respect your audience. Don't send unsolicited MP3s, don't send unsolicited
fliers. Everything should be opt-in.
11. Let your audience participate, let people help you. They're dying
to! Stay in the houses of fans on the road. Let fans design fliers and
t-shirts. Give them tools to promote you. All they want in return is
attention, and a bit of access. These sneezers are your key to success.
Treat your core fans incredibly nicely.
In the old days it was about being nice
to the PD. Now you go directly to the fan.
12. Put up live videos.
13. Tweet.
14. Be available on every social networking platform. Of course, Facebook,
but a new act could make headway using Foursquare. Hell, have your fans
come meet you at Starbucks!
15. Press is a bonus. Press is ignored by most people. It's seen as
hype. Just keep thinking about being one on one with your fans.
16. Don't think any one opportunity or gig is the key to success. You
never know what will break you through. And most times, it's later than
sooner. And, if it happens too soon...momentum tends to peter out.
17. Release dates are irrelevant. You're in constant marketing mode.
But the best marketing is a great track, that will be spread far and
wide.
That drop after the first week?
It just got worse.
Was 33.9% in 2000, it was 62.8% in 2009.
SoundScan is spinning some phony baloney
about pre-orders, old school "Billboard" is lamenting the
lack of price and positioning and radio support, and you're sitting
there saying...um, seems right to me!
The nineties are over. Where the goal
was to ship as much product as possible, create a public hoopla and
not only see albums fly out of the store the first week, but for weeks
to come.
First of all, people don't even want
the album, they just want the track.
And most people don't care about the
act anyway. And they can ignore it.
In other words, you've got to be in
it for the long haul. The really long haul.
You're better off not blowing your marketing
budget in anticipation of the first week. If you don't have a two year
campaign in place, you don't believe in the project. Or, you're working
for a major label, inured to short term results, desperately trying
to make sure you don't get fired.
In order to have sustained fans, you've
got to reach an audience with music. Not with photo shoots, not with
talking head TV appearances, you've got to make sure people hear your
music again and again. But you should start with a small group.
That's what old wave media doesn't understand,
how to harness the public, how to use social media to create a conflagration.
Old wave media believes you use social
media to spread the word. No, you infect fans, and then THEY spread
the word on social media. And it can take a very long time to happen.
And if you go for profits too soon, if you don't continue to improve
the underlying product, you end up with something like MySpace. A hit
for a minute, then toast.
This is scary to the old timers. They
want insurance.
But that insurance can only be bought
in a recording studio.
Yes, creators are more important than
ever before. Which is why labels keep going to the usual suspects, they
don't want to take a risk. But so many people are tired of this sound
and have tuned out, and the oldsters are fighting over crumbs.
If you want longevity, you'd better
create a new sound. Or at least an individual sound, a personality.
A good example of the future of music
is Zac Brown. He's been recording for years. His album's been out for
eons and he's still on the road. Not on vacation. Furthermore, word
spreads about his passion for cooking, and his desire to feed fans.
This hook builds his audience. Anybody can have a hit on the radio,
but can you bring people to the show, can you get them to keep coming?
My friend Jim Urie is lobbying to get
ISPs to crack down on file-traders. This is completely wrongheaded.
We don't want to cut down any access people have to becoming fans. As
for acquiring music... A better mousetrap is far superior to playing
Whac-A-Mole. Don't take away the cheese, make it more enticing!
We're never going back to the sales
figures of yore. Not because of theft, but because no one can get that
kind of mindshare.
But you can get some traction. If you're
willing to work really hard, continuously, always leading with your
music.

Great Alabama Blues Festivals
this Memorial Day Weekend!
Freedom
Creek Festival
and Old
School & Blues Festival
The Rural Members
Association is happy to announce that the
Freedom Creek Festival will take place on May 28 and 29, 2010, at
its usual location in Old Memphis, Pickens County, Alabama. Inspired
by the late, great and much-loved Willie
King, this festival is now in its 13th year at the same location,
on the land where Willie King lived for many years before his untimely
passing in March, 2009.
The festival aims to showcase local and regional musicians alongside
better know national and international headline performers, and this
year is no exception! Along with local performers such as "Birmingham"
George Conner and Clarence
Davis and regional artists such as Birmingham's own Elnora
Spencer and Atlanta-based Mudcat,
this year's festival features Jody
Williams, an outstanding guitarist originally from Mobile. According
to Wikipedia, "Williams cut his teeth gigging with a string of
blues musicians, notably Memphis Minnie, Elmore James and Otis Spann.
After touring with West Coast piano player Charles Brown, Williams established
himself as a session player with Chess Records. At Chess, Williams met
Howlin' Wolf, recently arrived in Chicago from Memphis, Tennessee, and
was hired by Wolf as the first guitarist in his new Chicago-based band
. . .". The veteran bluesman Eddie
Kirkland will also be performing on Saturday evening - a classic
and deeply experienced bluesman who, along with a prolific performing
and recording career, spent many years playing guitar with John Lee
Hooker. Friday night will feature the musical legacy of R. L. Burnside
in the form of Kent and Gary Burnside, two great musicians who have
performed regularly in Birmingham.
Since its inception, the festival has grown each year, attracting supporting
grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Alabama State Council
on the Arts and the Black Belt Community Foundation, as well as the
Music Maker Relief Foundation. Despite its remote location, it has featured
in press as far afield as the Chicago Tribune and UK's Blues and Rhythm
magazine and attracted a truly international audience.
The festival is presented by the Rural Members Association, the non-profit
organization that Willie King founded as a vehicle for this festival
and for his extensive community work. The organization is dedicated
to continue Willie's legacy and present this festival in the spirit

Elvin Bishop's newest release RED DOG SPEAKS will be available June
15th!
View the Ecard for audio samples and more info.
FEATURING GUESTS:
John Németh Tommy Castro Ronnie Baker Brooks
Buckwheat Zydeco Kid Andersen and more!
Following on the heals of his Grammy-nominated CD "The Blues Rolls
On", the legendary Elvin Bishop returns with his brand new release
"Red Dog Speaks". Full of strutting Blues and R&B, good-time
Rock & Roll, and even an occasional detour through Doo-Wop, Zydeco,
and Gospel, "Red Dog Speaks" is sure to make you howl.
Right out of the gate, Bishop leaves no doubt where his heart is, cleverly
introducing his long-time cohort - a 1959 Gibson ES-345 that lovingly
answers to the name of "Red Dog", with a gritty slow Blues
calculated to set the pace for what's to come. Along the way he smoothly
steers the way from strutting blues and R&B, to a good dose of good-time
Rock & Roll, and even an occasional detour through Doo-Wop, Zydeco,
and Gospel. Elvin has made plenty of talented friends over the years,
and many of them jumped at the chance to help out including John Nemeth,
Buckwheat Zydeco, Roy Gaines, Tommy Castro, Ronnie Baker Brooks, and
Kid Andersen who all make guest appearances. And all of it adds up to
an amalgam that can only be called "Elvin Bishop music."

I remember seeing her being on TV many times; and I remember
her entertaining the troops.
But, I I had no idea of her background, other than USO tours and show
business.
The following is from an Army Aviator friend who takes another trip
down memory lane:
It was just before Thanksgiving '67 and we were ferrying dead and wounded
from a large GRF west of Pleiku. We had run out of body bags by noon,
so the Hook ( CH-47 CHINOOK) was pretty rough in the back. All of a
sudden, we heard a 'take-charge' woman's voice in the rear.
There was the singer and actress, Martha Raye, with a SF ( Special
Forces) beret and jungle fatigues, with subdued markings, helping the
wounded into the Chinook, and carrying the dead aboard. 'Maggie' had
been visiting her SF 'heroes' out 'west'.
We took off, short of fuel, and headed to the USAF hospital pad at
Pleiku. As we all started unloading our sad pax's, a 'Smart-Ass' USAF
Captain said to Martha.... Ms Raye, with all these dead and wounded
to process, there would not be time for your show!
To all of our surprise, she pulled on her right collar and said....Captain,
see this eagle? I am a full 'Bird' in the US Army Reserve, and on this
is a 'Caduse' which means I am a Nurse, with a surgical specialty....
now, take me to your wounded. He said, 'Yes ma'am... follow me.'
Several times at the Army Field Hospital in Pleiku, she would 'cover'
a surgical shift, giving a nurse a well-deserved break.
Martha is the only woman buried in the SF (Special Forces) cemetery
at Ft. Bragg .
Hand Salute!
Down Memory Lane , Once Again' Check it out!
